We all know that finding the right sunscreen can be a challenge, especially an adequate one for each specific skin type. People with oily skin need a formula that provides adequate protection without causing breakouts or exacerbating oiliness. That's why we're here to help! In this article, we'll explore the optimal SPF ranges for oily skin and recommend specific products to meet these needs.

What is SPF exactly?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of the efficacy of a sunscreen in protecting the skin from UVA and UVB rays. UVA stands for Ultraviolet A, which penetrates deeply into the skin, causing premature aging and damage. While UVB rays (Ultraviolet B) primarily affect the outer layer of the skin, causing sunburn and contributing to skin cancer, both UVA and UVB rays can cause damage to the skin. The SPF rating indicates the length of time it would take for the skin to burn if sunscreen were not applied.

To get the SPF number, a simple formula is used. The number of seconds it takes a patch of skin to slightly redden when covered in sunscreen is divided by the number of seconds it takes to slightly redden when there is no sunscreen applied. Say it took 300 seconds for skin to burn with sunscreen, and 10 seconds to burn without it. 300 is divided by 10, which is 30. The SPF is 30.

SPF Range

SPF values can range from as low as 2 to as high as 100. The most popular ones are:

  1. SPF 15: Blocks about 93% of UVB rays.
  2. SPF 30: Filters approximately 97% of UVB rays.
  3. SPF 50: Blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays.
  4. SPF 100: Shields against approximately 99% of UVB rays.

While the percentage differences may not seem like much, they can make a big difference, especially for people who have sensitive skin or specific problems or conditions.

#JessBeautyTip: Remember. No sunscreen is 100% effective at blocking UV rays. That's why it's best to follow reapplication instructions regularly. It is important to reapply every 2 hours, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors, swimming or sweating.

What SPF Should I Use for Oily Skin?

Before talking about the SPF number, we need to clarify something: the formula and its ingredients are crucial as well. Oily skin is a skin type that produces excess sebum,  where pores can easily become clogged, which can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and other acne problems. So if this is your skin type, you will want to look for non comedogenic ingredients such as: green tea (camellia sinensis) , aloe vera, squalane and carota sativa (carrot extract).

Can oily skin use anything with oil? Yes! Just make sure it is a non-comedogenic oil and a dry oil, like baobab.

For oily skin, dermatologists generally recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen between SPF 30 and SPF 50. This range provides a balance between adequate protection and a lighter formula that is less likely to clog pores and cause breakouts. However, as we said earlier, if you spend a lot of time outdoors in contact with water, SPF 50 will be more appropriate.

What sunscreens for oily skin fulfilled all these requirements?

How Do I Choose Between SPF 30 and 50?

When deciding between SPF 30 and SPF 50, consider your lifestyle and skin type. Here are a few factors to help you choose:

  • Skin Sensitivity:  People with very clear or sensitive skin may benefit more from SPF 50 due to the higher level of protection.

  • Sun Exposure: If you are not exposed to the sun that much and spend a lot of time indoors, SPF 30 is great for everyday use. But if you spend a lot of time outdoors, an SPF 50 may provide a little more protection and extra peace of mind.

Protects skin from UVB rays and aging: SPF blocks UVB rays, preventing sunburn and protecting against premature aging. By reducing the breakdown of collagen and elastin, it reduces the risk of wrinkles and age spots.

Reduces skin redness: The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe extract can help relieve redness caused by sunburn. Provides relief to irritated or sensitive skin, reducing inflammation.

Antioxidant protection: Camellia Sinensis is rich in antioxidants and contributes to skin rejuvenation by improving overall appearance and texture.

No white cast: Both the gel and serum offer effective sun protection without compromising the skin's appearance.

Now it is up to you, what do you fancy today? silky texture? or refreshing gel?
