THE BENEFITS OF EXFOLIATING: WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTHY SKIN

Reading time: 8min

Science is creating more and more products and methods to improve the health and appearance of the skin. However, before carrying out any treatment, it is essential to prepare the skin properly.

That is, you need to exfoliate the skin if you want to achieve more effective results. Do you want to know about exfoliation and its benefits? In this article by Jess Beauty, we tell you everything you need to know and why you must include this practice in your beauty routine.

What is exfoliation and why should you do it

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the body's outermost layer by applying an exfoliating product or using exfoliation tools.

This practice can be done on any part of the body, but it is most common on the face, lips, hands, and feet.

Exfoliation serves several important purposes in skin care, and the benefits include:

  • Prevents clogging of pores: The accumulation of dead skin cells can clog pores and cause the appearance of blackheads and pimples. Regular exfoliation can prevent clogging of the pores and improve the appearance of the skin.

  • Helps absorption of skin care products: Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and allows skincare products like serums and moisturizers to penetrate the skin better and be more effective.

  • Stimulates Cellular Renewal: Exfoliating can stimulate skin cell renewal and enhance skin regeneration, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Improves Blood Circulation: Exfoliating can help blood circulation in the skin, improving skin tone and texture.

Types of Skin Scrubs

There are two main types of exfoliants: physical and chemical.

  • Physical exfoliants: These products contain particles or granules used to gently scrub the skin and remove dead cells. Physical exfoliants can be of natural origins, such as oatmeal, salt, or sugar, or synthetic, such as plastic microspheres. These exfoliants are effective at removing dead skin cell buildup and giving skin a smoother, more even appearance.

  • Chemical exfoliants: contain acids or other chemical compounds that dissolve or remove dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliants can be of various types, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), fruit acids, salicylic acid, and lactic acid. Chemical exfoliants are effective in smoothing skin texture, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and treating acne and other skin conditions.

How often should the skin be exfoliated?

The frequency of exfoliation depends on the type of skin and the products used. In general, it is recommended to exfoliate the skin once or twice a week for normal to dry skin and two to three times a week for oily or acne-prone skin.

However, note that exfoliation should be done in moderation and adapted to the needs of each skin type. If the skin becomes irritated or sensitive after exfoliating, you should reduce the frequency or change the type of exfoliator.

Also, it's important not to exfoliate your skin if it's damaged or if you have a condition, such as eczema or rosacea.

In short, it is important to note that exfoliation must be done carefully and with the appropriate frequency since excessive or aggressive exfoliation can damage the skin and cause irritation, redness, and dryness.

How to do it

The exfoliation can vary depending on the part of the body. Facial skin, for example, is more delicate than body skin and therefore requires a gentler exfoliator and a more careful application technique.

As for the body, the skin on the legs and arms tends to be thicker and more resistant, so you can use a stronger exfoliator such as a body brush or bath sponge. On the other hand, the skin of the armpits and the bikini area is more delicate, and you should use a gentle exfoliator to avoid irritation.

Also, consider sensitive areas of the body, such as knees and elbows, which may require a gentler scrub or a more careful application technique to avoid irritation and dryness.

In summary, exfoliation must be tailored to the specific needs of each part of the body to achieve the best results and avoid damaging the skin.

Face

To exfoliate the face, you can follow these steps:

1- Cleanse Face: Cleanse skin with a mild cleanser to remove dirt, makeup, and excess oil.

2- Apply the scrub: Squeeze a small amount of scrub into your hand and apply it to your face in gentle circular motions. Avoid the area around the eyes and lips.

3- Massage the skin: Gently massage the skin with the scrub for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Do not apply too much pressure to avoid irritating the skin.

4- Rinse with lukewarm water: Rinse skin with lukewarm water to remove the exfoliator. Make sure there is no residue on the skin.

5- Apply moisturizer: After exfoliating, apply a moisturizer to soften the skin and prevent dryness.

Lips

Lips can also be exfoliated to remove dead skin for smoother, healthier-looking lips. To exfoliate the lips:

1- Moisturize lips: Apply a hydrating lip balm to soften lips and prepare them for exfoliation.

2- Apply the scrub: Using your finger or a soft-bristled toothbrush, apply the scrub paste to your lips and gently massage in circular motions for 1-2 minutes.

3- Rinse with lukewarm water: Rinse lips with lukewarm water to remove the exfoliator.

4- Moisturize lips: After exfoliating, apply a hydrating lip balm to keep lips soft and hydrated.

Body

To exfoliate the body:

1- Moisten the skin: Before exfoliating, moisten the skin with lukewarm water to make it easier to apply the scrub.

2- Apply the scrub: Apply a sufficient amount of scrub to your hand and apply it to the body in gentle circular motions. Start at the feet and work your way up to the torso.

3- Massage the skin: Gently massage the skin with the scrub for 2-3 minutes. Do not apply too much pressure to avoid irritating the skin.

4- Rinse with warm water: Rinse the body with warm water to remove the exfoliator. Make sure there is no residue on the skin.

5- Moisturize the skin: After exfoliating, apply a hydrating lotion to soften the skin and prevent dryness.

In short, exfoliation is essential for skin care because it helps remove dead cells from the skin's surface, allowing fresh, new cells to regenerate.

Additionally, exfoliation helps improve the absorption and effectiveness of other skincare products, such as moisturizers and serums and can help prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Cheer up and start taking care of your skin as it deserves!
