We all love a nice perfume, it’s in us I think. No one can resist their favourite smell, maybe it’s chocolate, maybe it’s a flower, lavender, wood, cinnamon…But when it comes to your skincare products, that perfume may not be so beneficial for your skin, especially if you have rosacea.

Perfumes can cause redness, sensitivity or inflammation on the skin. So, does this mean you can’t wear any perfume, essence or infused lotion? Wait a minute. Don’t panic! We are here to teach you how to choose among your favourite products.

Let’s begin,

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common and chronic skin condition in which you may experience a number of symptoms over time such as redness, telangiectasia, and facial pimple. It’s hard to tell what the main factor is that causes this disease but a few factors are found to worsen the situation and fragrances and alcohol are among them.

Understanding Rosacea:

Rosacea is known as a certain skin problem that causes inflammation on the facial skin, as well as the appearance of vascular abnormalities that lead to redness or pustules, some more severe than others. Although it appears to be caused by certain factors such as genetics, abnormal blood vessel function, immune response and environmental changes, it is not entirely clear how rosacea develops.

A survey by the National Rosacea Society suggests approximately 5% of Americans – or up to 16 million people – have rosacea. So it’s pretty common, and as you can imagine, not everyone quit perfumes.

Skin care products that triggers your rosacea

People with rosacea may experience flare-ups when they use some skin or hair care product, perfume or cosmetics. This is frequently related to specific ingredients in those formulas, which we recommend to avoid:

High concentration of fragrance
Alcohol
Hydro-alcoholic compounds
Witch hazel
Lactic acid
Acetone
Menthol
Urea
SLS

What to do instead? Avoid using astringents and toners, go for gels or serums that are generally more gentle on the skin. But first of all, take a look to the ingredient list, see if you can find any of the following ingredients that are helpful to calm rosacea condition:

    - Argan oil
    - Niacinamide
    Chamomile
    Aloe
    Linoleic oils
    Green tea extract

      How Perfume Can Affect Rosacea

Fragrances in skin care products often cause reactions, and for individuals with rosacea, this sensitivity is heightened. Even minor external pressures can lead to redness and inflammation due to their very sensitive skin.

For example, when someone with rosacea gets stressed or exercises heavily, they may experience skin reactions. Cosmetics are a common concern for people with rosacea or sensitive skin because they contain various chemical components that can harm the skin. When these compounds are applied, they deeply penetrate the skin's layers, triggering irritation and inflammation.

The scenting compounds used in skincare products are elaborate compositions that may include:

      - Essential Oils: Although they can be beneficial, natural extracts can still cause allergic reactions, especially in sensitive individuals.

      - Synthetic Fragrances: Artificial fragrances developed in laboratories may irritate the skin and cause unpleasant reactions.

      - Preservatives and Solvents: These are added to maintain the product's freshness and extend its shelf life, but they can also damage the skin's barrier and cause irritation.

Despite the potential for many skincare products to trigger rosacea, most people in studies have found products that work for them. It is preferable to use fragrance-free skincare products to prevent issues.

Let's find out how to control rosacea.

How To Control the Rosacea Skin Condition?

An effective routine can help you to feel more at ease and manage your symptoms. You think I am talking about a skincare routine? Yes and no, there are a few more tips:

Starting with a skincare routine to calm rosacea:

Make sure to use  'hypoallergenic,' 'fragrance-free,' and 'non-comedogenic’ products. You can try any formula of our line, all of them contain the qualities mentioned before. Don’t worry about doing it all at once, start with small steps, the main idea is to manage your rosacea while keeping your skin healthy, comfortable, and radiant.

      Always SPF:

UV rays are very harmful for the skin, especially if you are prone to redness or inflammation. We recommend protecting your skin daily with Let it Sun SPF Jess Beauty’s SPF formulated with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These mineral-based sunscreens provide broad-spectrum SPF30, and SPF 50+ protection without irritating sensitive skin.

Let it Sun is a lightweight and non-comedogenic SPF that absorbs quickly and leaves no white cast. Ideal for everyday use, whether it’s raining, it’s cloudy or you are just about to sit in front of the computer.

      Avoid Tigger Food:

Some food like spicy hot meals can aggravate your rosacea. Choose light, calming foods that support your immune system and your skin.

#JessBeautyTip: natural superfoods like curcuma, camomille, aloe vera and green tea are great for reducing inflammation!

Protect your skin against extreme weathers:

For example, try to exercise in a cool environment to contrarest the outside heat. Or wear a mask or scarf to protect your face in chilly weather. It is advised to stay away from saunas and steam rooms as they can also result in redness.

           Check labels carefully

When you have a sensitive skin type, don't forget to read the label of your skincare, it's better to avoid those ingredients which make your skin condition worse whether you suffer from eczema, rosacea or other.

            Practice Mindfulness Exercises:

Did you know that among the benefits of breathing is calming the skin? Makes sense right? If yoga and meditation can help to reduce stress and calm the mind, why wouldn't the benefits extend to our complexion?
