What is Topical tranexamic Acid?

Topical tranexamic acid is a derivative of the amino acid lysine and has long been used in medicine to reduce excessive bleeding due to its vasoconstrictive properties.

In the skin care industry, it is an ascending ingredient, gaining popularity due to its ability to treat hyperpigmentation, melasma and other skin discoloration issues.

Tranexamic acid also works by blocking the activation of plasminogen, a protein that helps transmit pigment-producing signals to skin cells. By inhibiting this process, it prevents the overproduction of melanin, leading to a reduction in dark spots and overall skin discoloration.

Benefits:

Brightening of dull skin: Regular use of tranexamic acid helps to lighten the complexion by reducing excess pigmentation, leaving skin looking brighter and clearer.

Reduction of hyperpigmentation: Tranexamic acid inhibits the production of melanin by blocking the interaction between melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) and keratinocytes (skin cells). This results in a significant reduction in the appearance of dark spots, melasma and sun damage, and a more even skin tone.

Anti-inflammatory: Due to its vasoconstrictive properties, this acid helps to constrict blood vessels, potentially reducing redness and inflammation in conditions such as rosacea. It is particularly useful in calming post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that can result from acne.

Combination with other actives: Tranexamic acid works well with other ingredients such as kojic acid, vitamin C and niacinamide for a more complete approach to attack hyperpigmentation and skin lightening.
