What is Octocrylene?

Octocrylene is an organic compound used primarily as an ingredient in sunscreens and skincare products that offer sun protection. It is a colorless, odorless, and oily liquid that absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation, specifically in the UVB range (290-320 nm) and partially in the UVA range (320-340 nm). This makes it effective in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, such as sunburn, photoaging, and the development of skin cancers.

Benefits:

Sun Protection: The primary role of octocrylene is to act as a UV filter, protecting the skin from harmful UVB rays and some UVA rays. It helps prevent sunburn and other forms of sun damage.

Photostability: Octocrylene is known for its ability to stabilize other sunscreen ingredients, particularly avobenzone, which is another UV filter. This means it helps maintain the effectiveness of sunscreen formulations over time, ensuring consistent protection during sun exposure.

Water Resistance: Octocrylene contributes to the water-resistant properties of sunscreens, making them more effective during activities like swimming or sweating.

Antioxidant Properties: Although primarily used as a UV filter, octocrylene also has mild antioxidant properties, helping to neutralize free radicals generated by sun exposure, which can contribute to skin aging and damage.
