Alpha-Arbutin

What is Alpha-Arbutin?

Alpha-arbutin is derived from the leaves of plants such as bearberry, cranberry and pear trees, although it can also be synthetically produced for use in skin care. The "alpha" form is more stable and potent than its counterpart, beta-arbutin, because it is more water soluble and more effective at inhibiting melanin production.

It is a well-known ingredient in the skin care industry for its ability to lighten the skin, reduce hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone.

Benefits:

Brightening and even skin tone: Alpha-arbutin works by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the production of melanin (pigment) in the skin. By reducing excess melanin, it helps to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, leading to a more uniform skin tone.

Hyperpigmentation Treatment: It’s particularly effective for treating forms of hyperpigmentation, such as age spots, acne scars, and sun damage. It works gradually over time to lighten these areas without causing irritation.

Gentle on skin: Unlike some other skin-lightening agents, alpha-arbutin is much gentler and less likely to cause sensitivity or irritation, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Prevention of pigmentation: In addition to reducing existing dark spots, alpha-arbutin helps prevent new pigmentation from forming by interfering with the pigmentation process early on.

Synergy with other ingredients: Alpha-arbutin works well in combination with other skin-brightening and exfoliating ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, and AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), enhancing its effects in multi-functional skincare routines.
